He literally cries about nkot being treated as a third Sparkle childb in ep 200. Plus, they are never mentioned in Father Knows Beast. The biggest thing was Velvet and Night Light not inviting him on the family vacation, showing that they consider Cadance a bigger part of the family than him. (Plus, Spike specifically calls them "your parent" not "our parents"


 
My assumption was that he was raised at the castle and the Sparkle parents didn't know him that well as a result, but then ep 200 happens and left a lot of unfortunate questions.
