Finale Episode. The episode where not one Pony got a full night’s sleep the night before and they all had bags under there eyes.

Jim stated that a lot of what’s happened in the finale was left to interpretation. So I wouldn’t say the ship is cannon as much as it’s left for us to decide whether they became a couple or are just close friends. We haven’t seen anything that confirms any romance outright so it’s can go either way.

Yonabar? Poor guy would need a ladder.

Don’t know if it was intentional but at “What Lies Beneath”, it established the Gallstream as well as the Ocellus/Smolder one, but Sandbar and Yona don’t get paired up. So maybe it was a “pair the spares” idea from that.
 
(Honestly, I’m sure that with S9 pushing on what is considered traditional coupling between Scoot’s Aunts, the Lyrabon marriage, and the potentially gay stallions from the school, that adding Yonabar was pretty easy for them to get past Hasbro)

Personally, I think the seeds were planted back in School Raze.

Personally, I do not like this ship.  
I never liked Sandbar as a character.  
He never really grew on me either.  
I like Yona though, she grew on me over time and became my second favorite behind Smolder.  
As for the seeds being planted in She’s all Yak…  
Well, I thought that was one of the worst episodes of the entire season, so yeah.  
The only thing fun about it was the dancing,that was hilarious.
 
If people like it though, cool, that’s their thing.  
Seems like it may be loosely canon, but I’m not entirely sure.  
I don’t like it, but accept it’s what the writers (seem?) to have wanted, but again, I’m not sure.  
I personally see it as a rather pointless ship, since it was only given one episode to really work with.  
And an episode, that wasn’t even that good.
