Not to mention Diamond Dogs were humans too. Which is rather amusing considering out of all the Equestrian races, one would they’d be the ones that turned into dogs.

Maybe it’s just a case of an astronomical coincidence that the ponies have counterparts and the dragons have counterparts dogs.  
Anyway, Spike seems to be the only dragon with a version in Equestria Girls, so maybe he is not the standard.  
In addition, the Dazzlings are Sirens in Equestria but were transformed into humans.

I still think it’s weird that ponies come into EG as humans, but dragons come out as dogs, so dragons are inferior species?
 
This does raise more questions: What happens to hippogriffs, griffons & yaks when they travel there? And what about changelings who can already shapeshift? How would the mirror’s magic effect them?
