Years would be an understatement; as this screencap shows, they literally met as babies and then grew up together, and for that matter R&J had previous lovers.
Actually their story is far from a R&J rip off. Romeo and Juliet was about 2 lovers who rushed into things, these two took years to get to know each other. Other than the families feuding for what we assume is generations, that is the only link to that story. It is actually a bit closer to the Hatfield and McCoy’s than Romeo and Juliet.
