We actually know very little about the Egyptian sphinx, including what the Egyptians even called it. Sphinx is a Greek word, meaning “(female) strangler” and is related to sphincter and other words related to tightening around something.

The Egyptian sphinx is believed to be a guardian spirit, but again, we don’t know for sure. The Greek sphinx was obviously not a Lawful Good protector of Thebes.

And the riddle thing is entirely Greek. Also, bewbs.

TLDR: We know next to nothing about the Egyptian sphinx, so we give them aspects of the Greek one because that one we have extensive documentation for.

Most of the depictions of sphinxes in media are Greeks wearing Egyptian clothes. (Kind of like Cleopatra).

PS: I also just think Greece is an infinitely more interesting culture.
