the theory is public key authentication means nobody delivering your stuff can mess with it, and that lets untrusted people deliver it, instead of some big “trusted” authority like google. tor is a program written to take advantage of this, relaying your stuff through multiple random servers, so nobody can tell exactly where it came from. since the .onion is a hash of a public key, you can always be sure it’s the same site, even if it comes from lots of different servers.

it’s also a good way to have a website even if you change ISPs or servers, since people look it up by the .onion which never changes.

@King Swemmel
its a… “Search engine” so to speak.
You are currently on the surface web. (derpibooru, facebook, youtube, business sites, ebay, google that sort of thing)

Most things you can find are usually on the internet. the surface web.

things that are…a little more questionable go to the deep web. where the sharks go. But its not all bad! its not one hundred percent mind rape.

Things that are unlisted by google will not show on google. unless you search for it on the deep, proving its on the deep web.

For example. lets say you want something and type it into google, google will not recognize it because it is unlisted from their search engine. go on the T.O.R. browser and MAYBE it is in the T.O.R. browsers data base.

how ever…a lot of stuff on the deep web is just bollocks. hitmen for hire…drugs to buy…that sort of thing. there are…naughty things that will without a shadow of a doubt get you in trouble by the law on the deep web. they do exist.

i think it goes without saying that you should not search for that stuff. Unless you want a team of high visibility jackets standing on your door step with blue and red lights behind them.

Also TOR is not safe. its where the naughty boys hang out. the black hats the white hats. or “hackers” as commonly known by.

Im not going to tell you how to protect yourself in case this should bite me in the ass one day. even though i dont use TOR anyway. i have no literal need.

In short, TOR browser is used by those who are bored (finding funny or disturbing shit) people who want to hide stuff, or have their own agenda.

Thats not saying that there is no good stuff on TOR. if you look carefully you could find some pretty useful stuff or information! but that is no excuse to not be careful. some folk from countries with harsh censorship use TOR to get past their own censorship.

Usually most TOR websites end in “.onion” instead of “.com”

My advice, Stay away from it. theres nothing on there unless your feeling adventurous and brave. just bullshit, funny shit, disturbing shit, horrible shit. interesting shit. weird shit. religious shit, edgy shit and paranoid shit.
