So, to put that into perspective for the OP/image.

It is sort of true, sort of not true. The meme doesn’t use the same definition for the word “gay” as we’ve all come to know the word to mean. It specifically means the “gay” of the late 90’s, that ill-defined thing that macho straight men were severely scared of having applied to them. It’s the same mentality that tries to claim, “no homo” and “it isn’t gay unless __.” It has more to do with how the “not gay” man is accepted and perceived by his fellow macho men, nothing to do with his actual orientation.

Clearly, the trap himself is not that. It can only be the observer who is “gay” by this definition, making the statement effectively a tautology.

I think most of us have moved on from that thinking though, so it really has no meaning at all in today’s normal thinking, interaction, and use of the words.

Yes and no.

If you are biologically male, pass as female, and a straight male finds you attractive, then you have successfully been a trap for that brief moment. Being a trap is not a permanent thing. While grammatically it is spoken as if referring to you, the person, it actually refers to the concept. That concept being the insult to a masculine manly man’s straight pride. It is the insinuation that because he found you, a biological male, attractive, he’s “gay.” Strictly for the purpose of attacking his confidence in his orientation.

If that all doesn’t happen, then no. You’re just some guy dressing fabulously. Or “passing.” You’re not a trap.

Okay.

So basically, people could claim a crossdresser is a trap if said crossdresser actually looks feminine… So if I pulled of a convincing crossdress I’d be considered a trap, right?

Alright, the full description for you, since the rest of these people aren’t being all that helpful.

“Traps” originated with anime/manga. Some of the males either cross-dressed or were androgynous. Either on purpose or on accident, depending on the artist. It became something of a meme that a straight guy would see some “anime girl” and profess his affection for her, only to find out it was a guy.

This somewhat extended into the real world, as a lot of Asian men, particularly older teens or younger adults, can look fairly androgynous. With certain hairstyles, clothing, or makeup, they can easily pass for Asian girls/women. This effect can be a lot stronger among Caucasian men who are less culturally saturated with Asian facial structure/body-type as predominantly Asian cultures/geographies are.

So, these original “traps” were unwitting, for the most part. It was entirely a mistake on the part of the viewer. But like all things on the internet, this phenomenon became purposeful. Characters were drawn specifically to look female, dress female, act female. Then, “surprise, he’s a he!” Especially with porn. Flip through a gallery for a cute “girl” and when she undressed, bam, there’s a wang. The “trap” became purposeful at that point.

At this point, with the shift on culture in the US to be much more accepting and open towards male homosexuals, the “ha, you like a dude you’re gay!” part of it has diluted greatly. Guys are often much more willing to openly express interest in male characters than in the late 90’s. The “traps are gay” was pretty much centered around that gotcha and gay as an insult component of our culture in the US.

So, at this point, “traps are gay” is entirely meaningless. Many of the viewers are gay, bi, or simply comfortable with their orientation. If they mistake a guy for a gal in ink, oh well. If the depicted characters is gay, bi, or simply trying to get a rise out of someone, so be it. If the artist depicting the trap is gay, bi, or simply trying to get a rise out of straight dudes, so be it. There is nothing inherently gay or not gay about anyone involved in the trap. But the original “gotcha” of the trap meme was centered around the idea that the viewer was gay for making a mistake in identifying the gender of the ink “girl” he saw and appreciated. This is false, as the viewer was attracted to what he thought was female in appearance, and upon learning the character is male usually was disinterested or disgusted. Thus, not gay. Not a male attracted to males and the male aesthetic.

I Challenge this clame. The main reason it’s called a trap is that it is meant to deceive someone into thinking it’s a girl rather than a guy. Falling for a trap is what is expected to happen, if it’s not meant to fool you it isn’t a trap. As such Traps trick other men into thinking they are a woman in order to get some type of desired results, sexual or other. As such the trap, weather their target is gay or not, is gay.

While it’s true that being an effeminate looking male doesn’t automatically make someone gay, I think there’s wiggle room here. Traps that willingly have sex with other men are pretty gosh darn gay.
