Well, maybe it was a vulture skull. And are you sure there are fallen hippogriffs during the Storm King’s attack/invasion/conquering of Mount Aris and the Hippogriff Kingdom?

I just realized: I think that’s a hippogriff skull. Perhaps a fallen member of Mount Aris, and perhaps one of those lost that caused Queen Novo to never want to get involved against the Storm King ever again for sake of losing even more of her people…
 
Either that, or I’m totally over-examining this movie.
