Description

So the critic embargo ends on suday. This confirms that that one review is full of shit, because he claims to have been able to make the review because the embargo had been lifted. I guess we can expect review scores by sunday.

Orrr maybe different people have different ideas of what counts as a joke. My only point is people need to stop jumping on anyone critical of the show or associated films. Especially if the review isn’t being unnecessarily harsh. It’s clear the guy saw it and just wasn’t into it and that’s OK.

The official soundtrack certainly has pop songs, but the musical numbers actually in the movie are anything but. He didn’t say the jokes weren’t funny; he said that there weren’t any jokes at all. That’s false. Have see the advertising for the movie? Much of it is clearly aimed towards a general audience and not specifically at children or fans of the show. It’s supposed to be enjoyable for everyone.

and not all of the soundtrack is pop and there’s a difference between a joke and not being funny and not being a joke at all

The movie does have a lot of pop songs and maybe he just didn’t find the jokes all that funny? I didn’t see anything wrong with his review. If anything it was pretty fair coming from someone who doesn’t watch the show and just wasn’t that into the film. It’s not like he said it sucks. He just said that most people who aren’t into the show probably won’t find a reason to get into it in the movie and that’s true. It’s mostly for kids and for hard core fans.

He literally states that the soundtrack consists of nothing but pop songs and that the movie has no jokes whatsoever. Both of those claims are completely false. The trailers for the movie already disprove the joke claim, and even if he didn’t like the music, how could he possibly mistake a musical number like “Open Up Your Eyes” for a pop song?

Regarding the generic plot of the movie, that’s not really an issue. As we’ve seen in the show, the staff are more than capable of working a plot line that’s been used over and over again in fictional media so that it still remains fun and engaging for the audience. Moreover, almost nothing in Hollywood now is 100% original anyways. Just look at James Cameron’s Avatar; that film used one of the most common plot lines in storytelling yet grossed well over 2 billion dollars in its box office run.

One guy who’s unfamiliar with the franchise (and did he even see the original English-language version?) giving the movie a mediocre rating doesn’t qualify as a cause for concern, IMHO; every movie is going to have some critics, and an excellent 80% Tomatometer rating still means one out of every five reviews referenced by Rotten Tomatoes was negative. (Similarly, the smattering of positive reviews we’re now seeing is no guarantee that you, specifically, will like it.)

@zidders
“Party of One” used one of the most cliched kidvid plots in the industry, and it’s one of the most popular season 1 episodes; many other popular episodes followed generic plots as well. Execution matters; if someone doesn’t like “Sonic Rainboom” because the plot’s been done to death, I won’t say they’re wrong for having that opinion, but I’ll conclude they’re watching for different reasons and with a different mindset than I am.

…there’s nothing incorrect about anything they say about the movie. Their review is fair coming from someone who isn’t into the franchise. Given all the story points in all the adaptations we’ve seen so far the film has a generic plot. It’s a safe kids movie and by ‘safe’ I mean it follows a pretty generic formula.

There are question marks over how legit that review is. The person that gave that review claims that he saw it in a press release in Austria two weeks before the review, but there isn’t any information about that press release anywhere online.

Then how come not even a fellow brony in Austria was able to find any information whatsoever about that supposed showing? And even if his review is real, he’s still a lousy reviewer that can hardly be taken seriously, given that his claims about major aspects of the movie (such as the soundtrack consists of nothing but pop songs) are completely false.

Yeah, but your complaint about the ‘pop songs’ when most of them are broadway style musical numbers (2 pop songs, 5 broadway style is the actual movie songs) made it seem suspect that your review wasn’t genuine, as you couldn’t even say the proper genre of the musical numbers.

No, it’s not. The embargo was different for them because the MLP movie has a different distributor in Australia. Said distributor stipulated only that reviews not be released until after the New York premier rather than after the actual release. His comments on his video:

“It’s also a common practice to post a review BEFORE the actual movie release. That’s also the case for YouTube reviews, keeping in mind that the uploader must be able to see the movie before. (But almost all of the bigger names, like Jahns, the Schmoes, Stuckmann etc. are able to do that. I’m very lucky that I’ve been attending press screenings for many years by now. In the past I wrote for a German online-blog and since two years I’m doing movie reviews in English on YouTube)

Regarding the Equestria Daily site and its reporting on early screenings. A press screening is not considered an “early screening” because it’s not meant for the general public. I’m just talking about the situation in Austria but those screenins are held early in the morning and are only for journalists who will get invitations. You can’t finy any Austrian press screening information to any upcoming movie just on the internet. (And each day there are those press screenings for all the upcoming movies) I understand that most people don’t know how those screenings work, how should they. But to point it out one more time: A press screening and an early screening are two separate things.

To elaborate further. I wasn’t aware that my review would be the only one. Like I said elsewhere, I signed a NDA which stated no reviews (or any words anywhere) before the world premiere in New York. I thought that there would be reviews coming out in the US and elsewhere as well. So maybe there weren’t any press screenings in the US yet, I don’t know about that. Another thing you must understand. The film distribution company that brings out the movie in the US can be a different one than in Austria. For this movie it’s “Tobis Film” in Austria.

So again, it wasn’t my plan to be the only one on the whole internet to have a review. I simply waited until the embargo was over and posted it, like I always do with my reviews. The review was actually shot a few weeks ago (which you might tell from the length of my hair compared to the Kingsman 2 review).

Since I’m usually posting my reviews before the release I try not to give anything away that might be considered a spoiler. Normally I’m still able to get into more detail but with this one it simply wasn’t for me and the review turned out to be quite short. I still tried to be as neutral as I could be and I don’t think I was mean or anything like that to fans of the show. I stated that I think the movie will appeal to fans, but maybe not so much to people who weren’t in contact with the franchise before… like me.

I hope this might shine a light on the matter.”

Some guy made a youtube review of the movie claiming he went to see it at a press showing in australia 2 weeks before the NY premeir. There was no press showing in australia. He also claimed he was able to make the review because the embargo had lifted despite him being the only reviewer. We now know the embargo has yet to be lifted and that his review is fake.
