We know that Equestria has many dangerous and scary places such as the Everfree Forest and Flame Geyser Swamp.
 
My theory is that Bright Mac and Pear Butter were doing their pie delivery together to some far-away place until they suddenly found themselves trapped in a cursed forest…doomed to wander forever but never finding a way out.
 
I got this idea from Season Four’s “Somepony to Watch Over Me” and the American folk ghost story “The Phantom Lovers of Dismal Swamp.”

Imagine all the trees with that flower from that episode turning back into ponies who had been trapped since before the founding of Equestria and trying to return to a world they hardly recognize.
