I for one very much doubt that dragons eat ponies. As Spike has shown, they mostly eat gemstones and find organic food rather distasteful.
Do you try to eat flies that annoy you? I don’t think adult dragons view ponies as food. Perhaps the ones that were grabbed were intended to be played with or made examples of.
