She and Luna were the same size >1000 years ago when Discord was sealed, so Celestia is probably maxed out. Luna might still have growing to do if being in the moon put her in effective stasis.

I’ve always gotten the impression that Twilight and Cadance weren’t quite Actual Alicorns– who I assume are functionally immortal in that they won’t die of old age, something would have to actively kill them– but have vastly longer base life expectancies than any unmodified Pony of the Three Tribes ever could.
I really do feel like it’s part of the reason she teaches
That’s one of the few areas where I really think the IDW comics have enormously outpaced the show; they make it abundantly clear that Celestia is just lonely as heck after however many thousands of years of watching everyone she loves aside from her sister wither and die in the knowledge that she herself must continue on for the sake of her nation, and the issues where she’s teaching new students and dealing with students grown old and become teachers themselves really drive home that existential melancholy in a way the show has never explicitly addressed.

I don’t really think it’s necessarily in Celestia’s personality to view life like that. Sure, friends passing away is sad, but the time spent with a recently passed away friend is miniscule compared to the total amount of time spent with them in the first place.

Becoming sad or lonely over millennia isn’t an inevitability.

So to borrow a bit from Tolkien, true alicorns are kind of like elves, and created ones are more in line with the long-lived Númenóreans? Because yeah, I could see that.

I don’t remember where I first saw it, but I remember seeing this little 3 part comic once where the first panel had a small child welcoming Halley’s Comet, the middle had an old man welcoming it back, and the third showed just the comet alone. And it always stuck with me because I thought it really captured the idea that there are some things in the world that exist on a timescale we barely register on.

And I agree that the comics have actually done a good job here. Much as I would love more existential discussions on the show (and now have a mental image of Celestia talking to Gummy while all the ponies except Pinkie look at her in confusion), the comic does manage to capture some of the feeling of her (likely unending) burden.

this is pretty much exactly what I see happening in Equestria Actual at some point in the future.
Truth be told I never bought into the idea that Twilight being an alicorn suddenly made her immortal, but I still find the idea interesting to discuss. Especially since both Luna and Celestia are living through the consequences. I mean, consider how your view of the passage of time changes the older you get. When you’re young enough, waiting for the holidays or summer vacation, a few months is still a significant portion of your entire life, and your experience of the wait involved is appropriately lengthy. You reach adulthood, however, and a few months is so little time you’re already wondering how to get everything done before the holiday arrives. And that’s just within a lifespan that will maybe make it over the century mark. How bad does that get when you have 10, 20, or maybe even 30 times that amount of life behind you, and untold eons left ahead?

You can’t help but think that there must be moments where Celestia is confronted by the sheer vastness of the gulf of time that exists between her and all her subjects. It’s so easy to picture her having a sudden urge for cake made by one of her favorite bakers and asking her guards to get some, only to find out that the pony she’s talking about died before they were even born. I really do feel like it’s part of the reason she teaches. Because a meaningful connection, no matter how painful it may be to her eventually, is one of the few things that can keep her from losing track of time altogether.

Actually, this is a conversation with Princess Celestia I’d like to see.

“I know what you’re going through, Twilight. The first few centuries are the hardest.”
“They are?”
“Yes. You’ll see traces of the family you grew up with in every relative. If your friends had foals of their own, you’ll still have living reminders of what you’ve lost. And they’ll know you, and talk to you about them as long as they live.”
“Oh.”
“And then one day, the children of your friends and relatives vanish as well. And suddenly you realize no one but you remembers them. Not the way they actually were, anyway. The little quirks, the flaws, the details that made them unique and special and memorable, replaced with whatever stories survive. And it’s like losing them all over again.”
“D… Does it ever stop?”
“It can hurt less. But there are only two paths moving forward from this, Twilight. On the first, you withdraw from the world to avoid forming another significant friendship. But eventually you’ll find you couldn’t even if you wanted too, because compared to the span of you life most other ponies are brief points of light that shine for a moment in the dark, and are extinguished.”
“And the other path?”
“You live with the pain. You make new friends, you teach, you take on protégés… anything that forces you to remain connected to the world, so you don’t end up watching it go by centuries at a time. And when they’ve gone, you pick up and start again. And again. And again.”

“I now kind of regret getting them all killed in that not-quite-as-bloodless-as-I’d-initially-hoped coup.”

Don’t know what your talking about the others are on vacation at kindly old farmer Bill’s farm where they get to have friendship adventures in his large fields with other ponies like Bright Mac and Pear Butter.
