(And so this discussion goes off in a whole ’nother direction)
I said pretty much the same thing in another thread. It was trying so hard to be anti racist, and ended up white mans burden, the sequel.
He remedied his issue with his perception of the moral from Dragon Quest being “You have to change your race to be decent” by…having a bunch of dragons live in a pony city, adopt pony culture, and (apparently) even adopt disdain for non-“enlightened” dragons. (Whitley said that they went to Dragontown because they wanted to live a decent life, ie not living like a dragon, but like a pony)
People make fun of this story for a reason. Instead of correcting the issue he saw, what he actually did was create a bunch of dragons who not only gave up their culture, traditions and lifestyle but added some bizarre victim complex thing that makes you wonder why the dragons want to live around there to begin with. If you hate both how “other” dragons are as well as ponies blaming you for stuff, why did you found your settlement in a pony town? If you’re really so strong, why not make your own. The Diamond Dogs did, ffs.
Edited
Agreed. I actually liked Mina, but Luna was wasted and it took a huge dump on the lore.
Well, I thought Itsthinking was one of them, as I remember him being pretty critical of FF #14 - but he’s explained his reasons now.
That only works if it’s the same ponies. Different folks may have different opinions.
Hmm, fair enough.
It was mostly the setting and disregard for lore that was bad there.
Well the fact that the one dragon he does like leads them does endanger a little sympathy for their side of the story.
That episode was shit…
Well it is Starlight…
That… seems nedlessly complicated.
obv. she’s casting a spell to make her horn stop glowing
Starlight’s magic confirmed for not even drawn. I hadn’t even noticed before your post.
No just the first 5 pages. The full issue drops on the 12th.
Maybe making Spike upset about how the ponies are being insensitive is just some dumb way to motivate him to do something and get the story rolling.
“That a feeling is bestowed on us by Nature, does not necessarily legitimate all its promptings. The feeling of justice might be a peculiar instinct, and might yet require, like our other instincts, to be controlled and enlightened by a higher reason. If we have intellectual instincts, leading us to judge in a particular way, as well as animal instincts that prompt us to act in a particular way, there is no necessity that the former should be more infallible in their sphere than the latter in theirs: it may as well happen that wrong judgments are occasionally suggested by those, as wrong actions by these.”
–John Stuart Mill, Utilitarianism (1861)
Do note how Evo commented upon the fact that they don’t have to mindlessly follow it. Also, @kztxl7 this.
I still maintain this is meant to be a message about racism that’s derailed due to the ponies making more sense than the dragons they’re supposedly racist about.
No it’s not.
Ones instincts can play a part in ones decisions.
A naturally aggressive species or person can make decisions that are more aggressive and violent because of instincts.
She just saw Ember talking about how she (believes she) has justification for the attack, and that she’s giving her enemy time to regroup.
Its nonsensical to say that its instinct at this point.
