But they had a sun and moon cutie mark so it would be their special talent to raise the sun and moon and they would have to do it. It's what defines their entire personality and their names so it's likely not something that just came along at some point. Unless they came from another dimension that would have a whole separate sun and moon that wouldn't make sense. They would have to exist after the foundationg of Equestria taking over the unicorns jobs.
