Luffy’s actually older than he looks. He’s 17 when we see him in the beginning of the series. I just wanted to let you know that. Secondly, this is a schizo-tech Crapsaccharine fantasy World set in an age of Piracy, cigarettes would definitely fit. Hammer guns (the one 4kids made) would be horrible weapons. Oda could draw one better, and make it look threatening than that.

I will say that I strongly disagree about the edits and how 4kids handled the series. I used to like the 4kids dub back in middle school/High School, heck I even used to like the rap. However, I yearned for more. Even wanting to play localized video games to get my fix. Once I discovered how 4kids butchered the series, I couldn’t really enjoy it anymore. Yes, it’s understandable anime will get edits in order to be broadcast on Television however when 4kids acquired the series they didn’t know what they were getting into. Sure, One Piece looked silly, fun, and goofy on the outside but once they looked at how much violence/mature themes dealt with they ran into problems. They had to make this series presentable for their Fox Saturday Morning Block and adhere to their own standards.
 
The edits went beyond removing taboo material for TV. The original score was removed and replaced with a bland synthesized generic score that didn’t fit, characters backstories were changed losing the emotional impact they had, episodes were cut and fused with each other, and several plot-holes were created that would’ve been a huge problem way down the road had they continued even further. Out of the original 143 episodes, 104 English episodes made. Too add further insult to injury, Uncut DVDs were considered but never made for the series. So, if you wanted to watch the series as it was originally intended legally you were pretty much SoL. Can you see why Anime/One Piece fans are still despised 4kids to this day?To quote: “They took what was once a really cool, pretty edgy and exciting kids’ show that had great characters and some really awesome battles and made it this terribly acted pile of garbage.” Thank goodness, Funimation came in to redub the series so it’s life in the West didn’t just end there though the damage is already done. Had Funimation acquired the series first, it would’ve gotten edits for broadcast sure but at least it would’ve stayed true to the story but at least we would’ve gotten Uncut DVDs so everyone can be satisfied.
 
4kids gets my thanks for introducing me to One Piece, but that’s all they get from me. They were in over for their heads localizing the series and because of their fumbling the franchise was set back for many years in the west. It pains me that people who could’ve been fans of the series, who couldn’t get past the shoddy dubbing, were turned off and never looked back at it.
 
If I can recommend something, if you have time watch the Funimation English Dub or read the English manga. You’ll get the best localisation, and I can say that the original One Piece is just as humorous and even clever than 4kids’ hackjob.

Like, I understand people being pissed at 4Kids sloppily editing the shit out of anime to make it, well, “for kids”, but I actually really preferred their dub of One Piece to the original. Like, it’s a show where a rubber twelve year old wants to be “the greatest” because that’s all the motivation young male anime stars ever need, with all manner of batshit insanity going on. Spring-loaded hammer guns, poisonous suction-cups, and femboys with suckers, to me, makes more sense within the realms of the show’s world than actual guns and cigarettes XD

I’m curious what an onigiri is like but none of the Japanese restaurants I go to ever seem to have them on the menu.

Rice makes nice filler, and you can cook it with just about anything. Also it’s really good for you. Rice in and of itself is bland, yeah, but you just need to put something on it. Heck, mixing in some soy or barbecue sauce will fix that :D

As someone who has a good portion of Puerto Rican, I can guarantee you that rice is a huge part in a lot of the meals we make at home. With some beans, chicken, and pork, it’s f***ing amazing. One of the best meals we’ve made with it was Chicken with tomato sauce.

And if you have white rice and no other foods to mix with it, it’s quite nice mixed with some butter and soy sauce. Creates a nice nutty flavor.

I also have a fond memory of eating homemade rice pudding as a child. Haven’t had any in years though, maybe I should find a recipe and make myself some to see if it’s still as good as I remember.

It’s especially good mixed with chicken and vegetables
