fuck you 4kids||
They actually did that with a bunch of names XD
But, the American names are a lot better since the Japanese names are really on-the-nose. Like, Charmander is “Lizardo”, Kakuna is just “Cocoon”, Pidgeotto is just “Pigeon”, “Doduo” is just “Dodo”, Haunter is just “Ghost”, and the three legendary birds are just “Freezer”, “Fire”, and “Thunder”. I guess they sound cool to a Japanese ear, though XD
@Dragonpone
Hahahahaha XD
Edited
Obligatory “America almost made Pikachu a tiger with big boobs” comment.
Now I’m imagining them Americanizing the Pokémon names.
“Zappy Mouse, hit that Fire Gecko with your Big Ol’ Lightning Attack!”
@Brass Melody
Yeah it was one of those “kids are morons” kind of things I think, where they were like “kids have no clue what onigiri or a rice ball is so call it a donut” which I don’t get. Like, it’s a fantastic world with fantastic creatures and customs: you could have them eat anything called anything, and if kids didn’t know what it was they’d just assume it was a fantastic dish :P
Yeah I remember now, I posted the image in a Discord I am on and everyone was like “It was Brock in Pokemon!”
Yeah it was a 4kids attempt to Americanize the show somewhat.
Edit: Mistranslation might be taking it a step to far, weird English localisation might be better.
Edited because: Additional detail
Are you aware though that KFCs in China have a problem with “mystery meat” and at least one case of someone dying pretty much immediately after eating some of their “chicken”?
Sugar, syrup, and ice should be part of everyone’s diet :D
True. It’s not part of our diet ;)
I’e heard they don’t have slurpies though D:
It’s a lot harder to find stuff like that here in the US. I’ve never even seen them at this Japanese restaurant in my town :P
they sell them at Sushi Stands and conveyer belt restaurants over here in Britain which are in Railway Terminuses, Airports and big Entertainment Venues but not at the Sandwich/fizzy drink counter in Supermarkets (where Sushi itself is usually sold at in British Supermarkets) like what they do in Japan itself where they actually are like the equilvelent of packaged Sandwiches
Yeah I’ve honestly never found it. It probably wouldn’t be the real thing even if I did find some, either D:
I’ve been to a lot of Japanese and Asian restaurant but they never have Onigiri on the menu.
I definitely want to try the real thing but I just haven’t ever been able to :D
I’m the British guy who talked to you about what the Japanese are with Western and other Asian food and now you’ve seem have 2 competitors who thought Rice Balls with fillings were Donuts even though I thought they we a type of small cake or breakfast bun, also have you had them or not as I have had a few times from when i went to the same Comic Con in London twice but at the different times of year it was on, while waiting in the station for my train to depart after visiting London for a day and having them when I recently visited Japan itself from a Japanese Supermarket in Tokyo and having something to eat and drink while riding the Bullet Train from Tokyo to Kyoto?
Same here XD
I thought they were just overly powdered until I noticed they were rice
XD
@Background Pony #B013
Lol derp. Yeah I meant like Western cartoons in general. I sort of categorize them as Western and Anime, even though there’s a ton of overlap :D
by the way as you said “our cartoons” I’m actually British but i do know a lot about Japanese and other countries stuff though
They did do that in Inside Out as in the Japanese version of the film the young Riley is disgusted by not wanting to eat green chilli peppers instead of broccoli as for Western and other Asian cartoons they just leave to food as it is as they already know what western and other Asian country food is and you do at times see Anime characters eating and advertising western food in the show/movie/manga themselves
