They’re not using the Elements, you can tell by the way their horns glow with their normal magic colors right before they shoot. The “rainbow” looks different because it’s coming from their own powers combining.

Why is everyone saying this is Luna and Celestia? Celestia said that she knows almost nothing about the Crystal Empire. If she tried to save the damn thing, she’d probably know more about it.

Luna was probably pretty fucked up by then, yeah, and the elements don’t work properly with a conflicted heart… So that’s probably again why they sealed him away rather than cure him, if he even has anything.
 
Man, the Elements really aren’t the catch-all we thought they were. You better be having a good day when you decide to use them.

Whoa whoa whoa, if this happened 1000 years ago, wouldn’t Luna have been evil?
 
Maybe thats why the rainbow is fucked up, because Luna’s slowly turning at this point. Or maybe King Sombra is the reason, that Luna became evil. She seemed pretty rilled up at the fact that she couldn’t go to the Cystal empire to fuck his shit up.
