I’ve been seeing this in various different forums; now I never played a single Final Fantasy game, so can anyone please tell me, are the character in those games really that depressed/emo/whatever?

WRONG! only Cloud and Squall are depressed all the time, the other not! specially WoL (Warrior of Light, the first hero), he was designed to be inmmune to angst, the villains tried to screw him but he says “GTFO asshole”, that is why he is the leader.
