I think he means that some people think it’s officially canon, when it really, really isn’t. There’s no way the show can go that far without getting a lot of heat.

Don’t try, logic is not to be found in these situations, everyone wants diversity and will go out of their way to find it. They just tell themselves these things and force themslves to believe it. I mean, that’s why there’s people confident that RD is lesbian, even though there is not proof unless you put on bricks for glasses.
Portrayed as in it’s specifically stated or implied on the show that the character is trans.
How would one be “portrayed” as trans/nb, especially if they transistioned at an early age?
It’s actually pretty easy to prove that a character isn’t transgender.
Just ask: Is this character portrayed as transgender? Has any writer/producer/etc stated that the character is transgender?
If the answer to both of these questions is no, than the character almost certainly isn’t transgender.

I’m 50% tumblr and I can safely say there is no way you can prove that someone isn’t trans/non-binary. Other users much more skilled than I can go into great detail about these characters that they love so much :D
