Or maybe don’t make any references at all. References are crutches when you can’t think of anything clever to say.

Now I know what’s exactly wrong from this series, aside from one another reason.
The problem isn’t in wording or grammar, it’s in the fact that everybody talks like 14 year old anime afficionados.
The artist’s native language is Spanish, not English. Maybe you can forgive them for that.
Also, at least their English is far better than that of a lot of Spanish-speaking guys I’ve ever seen and/or heard.
