So this tag exists, alternate character and I’m not sure what the definition or meaning is. The description is has now is rather vague.

Applied to alternate versions (made by artist) where the major difference is another character(s).
Does not apply in cases, if different look is a part of a character design (for example Princess Luna and Nightmare Moon; Queen Chrysalis and Princess Cadance).

Not only do I not understand what the second half means, but the first half is really vague. It says nothing about clone YCHs, which seems to be the majority of what it’s tagged on, and I don’t get that, as that implies that one image is the original of it, which doesn’t feel fair to me.
From name alone, I would assume this tag is for images where the artist makes an alternate version of an image with a different character of the exact same pose and setting.

But since a lot of the imafes tagged with it do seem to be YCH results, idk, what does this tag mean? What should it mean? As I am struggling to come up with that and want to define it based on what people think.
Please let me know if this tag was discussed before.

I’ve seen plenty of work where an artist creates stuff with their OC and then also a different character, as well as just do stuff like “this pose with each of the M6”, that aren’t YCHs

I’m not sure what to do about “the unfairness of one being the original and others alternates”; one of them has to have come first…

IMO, “alternate version” (and therefore “alternate character”) should not get used for YCH results in general, a viewpoint I also mentioned in this thread that asked about “set” vs. “series”. “YCH result” on its own strongly implies there may be several character-versions of the “same” thing.

“alternate version” ought to be used within YCH results only when each fulfillment of a YCH is by itself a grouping of alternate versions (eg. if a YCH always gives both an SFW and NSFW version, etc.)

If it’s decided to use “alternate version” on general YCH results, the incomplete/advertisement-version of the YCH would be the “original”, but it might not have been uploaded to Derpibooru…

Or, sometimes the artist completes a rendition of the YCH on their own accord (with nobody requesting it) - these get tagged as “ych example” - and could be treated as an “original”.

Formalizing things about YCH tags overall has been procrastinated upon for years (my 4-year-old thread).

That is indeed pretty weird. I also can’t find anywhere on the forum that the description was proposed.

I guess that part is meant to say it should really be a whole other character, like a Pinkie Pie/Pinkamena pair of images wouldn’t count as an “alternate character”, and neither would Chrysalis vs. Chrysalis in disguise.

YCH tags are such a mess, I feel like artists find new ways to invent 15 tags that all mean the same thing every month.

That’s bizarre, but also we DO count Nightmare Moon and Luna as different characters here, so. Logically that WOULD be an alternate character. This sentence doesn’t even line up with current site logic.

YCH tags are such a mess, I feel like artists find new ways to invent 15 tags that all mean the same thing every month.

Wanna see my list of even more commissions and commissions open tag variants I’ve been compiling? We got plenty of those because they are very difficult words to spell correctly.

(We should have a generic “tag spelling variants” discussion thread where we could compile all the misspelled variants of common tags for assessing and potential aliasing.)

That’s…a pretty good idea actually. I don’t nessesarily know if it’ll be worth pinning, but I could see a general thread for it working.

ych tags are indeedy such a mess, i go and clean it up a lot, particularly when artists’ use both “ych result” and “your character here” tags …

anywayyzz in the interest of staying on topic, i think at the very least the description should be changed?

i understand the reasoning of not wanting to use it for ych results, as in name it should be an alternate version of sorts, but i feel like that’s what i see it used the most on regardless… (minus anything i have recently done myself lol) however, i think it is also only mostly used by people who enjoy tagging and stuff, so i’m sure they would notice a change in definition?

we could amend the description to include something like “for finished ychs featuring multiple characters in similar poses, use ych result”

sorry if this isn’t the most helpful :’)
just sum thoughts
