Yeah, because that stone looks much like salt.
Come to think of it, a rare fanon was that salt was what ponies had in lieu of alcohol….
 
It’s not fanon. In the first Appleoosa episode there’s a salt bar, with a clearly drunk patron being thrown out because “he had too much salt”.

What makes you think it’ll hatch, if it hasn’t already?
 
Narrative causality. It’s a huge egg in a former dragon nest, with a lot of attention deliberately drawn to it. That gun is too big and purposefully suggestive to believe they do not plan to fire it in a later episode.
