Andy Summers & Robert Fripp - I Advance Masked, China - Yellow Leader, New Marimba, Hardy Country and Still Point
From the first collaborative album by the two English guitarists, “I Advance Masked” (1968). Andy Summers was most famous as the lead guitarist of the Police, and Robert Fripp was the bandleader of King Crimson. Both of them have been friends since the 1960s, and on this album, their guitar prowess mingles beautifully with their mastery of other instruments, forming a sound that can be described as electronic ambient and avant-garde, with touches of Jazz and Rock sensibilities. I’d describe this album as pretty much like “painting on a canvas, but with musical instruments” in place of the brushes.
Cool stuff!
Summers himself described it himself thusly:
“ “a synthesis of two guys who grew up playing guitar, heard the Beatles, listened to jazz, have been influenced by Oriental music and Steve Reich, but still happen to be playing in a rock context. Every track started the same way, just two guitars. On some of them I played a little bass or put on a bit of percussion or string synthesizer. There are no drums but you don’t miss them. Some of it is very accessible and some is very avant-garde”

Joe Meek & The Blue Men - I Hear a New World, Valley Of the Saroos, Magnetic Field, Orbit Around The Moon and Love Dance Of The Saroos
From a 1991 expansion of the 1960 studio concept album (originally released merely as a four song EP in its original time due to apprehensions over the music’s commercial appeal, or so I gather) “I Hear A New World”, produced by the late English (From Newent, Gloucestershire) record proudcer and songwriter with the aforementioned British backing group. An early studio record, it is considered highly innovative and imaginative in its field, pioneering a mix of experimental, space-age Pop with Electronic music and elements of Rock and Roll. Joe Meek was fascinated by the space programme, believing there to be life out there on other planets. Its intentionally strange and out-there sound owes to, in Meek’s own words, his attempt “to create a picture in music of what could be up there in outer space”. As such, among the exotic electronic bleeps and bloops and scattered Rock and Roll performances are interspersed with both normal and sped-up vocals, the latter sounding very much like something out of Alvin and the Chipmunks. The album’s mixture of daring musical pursuits would go on to become an influence on the Psychedelic music movement that was to follow in the ensuing years of the 1960s.
Tragically, Meek (who was a Bipolar-Schizophrenic and a homosexual during a time when homosexual acts were considered illegal in the UK), died in 1967 in a murder-suicide; he shot the landlady of his flat using a single-barreled shotgun he confiscated from his protege Heinz Burt, after which he turned the gun on himself.
Despite any controversy, Joe Meek remains a giant in the world of Pop and Rock music many decades later for his outstanding contributions.

As a NWOBHM lover, I’m a huge fan of Tokyo Blade! In fact, I’ll be listening to their new album in a few days. Edit: I forgot the album had already come out, And I have been busy with a lot of other bands in the mean time, but I penciled the album in on my “to listen to” list” for Sunday
