The trailer for Sucker Punch Productions’s next game “Ghost of Yotei” has been released. Here’s my analysis on the trailer:
-The game takes place in 1603, which is at the end of the Sengoku Period and the start of the Edo Period. The Sengoku Period was a violent period due to constant civil wars and social upheavals, while the Edo Period was characterized by economic growth, strict social order, and popular enjoyments of art and culture.
-Mount Yotei is located in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. The Ainu (native people of Japan) called Mount Yotei “Makkarinupuri” or “Machineshiri,” which means “female mountain.” I wonder if Atsu (the game’s main character) is an Ainu?
-The word okami means “wolf” or “great god” in Japanese. The Ainu revered the wolf as the deity Horkew Kamuy, AKA the “howling god.” My guess is that the wolf in the trailer is Atsu’s spirit animal.
-The musical instrument that Atsu has on her back is shamisen, which was introduced in the 16th century through the port city of Sakai, near Osaka.
It’ll be interesting to see Sucker Punch’s depiction of Hokkaido in the game.
