Simple. Derpy sees Flash get ignored by SciTwi, goes to comfort him, one thing leads to another and next thing you know the S.S. FlashDerp is cruising at a steady pace.
…the only thing that could improve on this more would be human Sunny as well. Or maybe pony versions of the two Twis or something, which would be cute but not really logical in the context of EqG-land. xD

To me, it seems fair to describe Sunset in the third movie as “constantly frustrated and under pressure for expected success”, which may mess up the timing, but it does strengthen the parallels.
I think given her base personality (which has been shown to be the same between the two worlds), she’d probably be more of a school delinquent and the leader of her own gang.
Not a day pun, but clever enough that I can get behind it.
