My headcannon involving the mirror is that it malfunctioned. Spike was supposed to stay a dragon, but the element of harmony that went through to portal threw off some of the mirror’s magic properties. EG would’ve been a lot shorter of Spike stayed a dragon.

I accept this headcanon.  
Goddamn mirror can’t supress dat dragon blood forever.  
It just takes a little stimulus and BAM. Shows that he’s the parallel version of a motherfucking dragon.
