Description
Ponyville managed to keep its rustic aesthetic, despite losing its village status, town status, city status, and conurbation status long ago. To the ire of traditionalists and old-world historians it is a somewhat vague section of what is known as the Arcology of Equestria, extending from the Friendship Castle out to Sweet Apple Acres… or at least what was once Sweet Apple Acres.

I get the feeling that the government would prefer not to make something like that, else they risk people trying to build their own to live off the land, rather than fulfil their roles as consumers.
Humanity has tried and failed many times in creating a self-sufficient single building, one you could last a few years living in and so on. If it had continued to grow and change, odds are Kowloon City would have been the first self-sufficient complex. Since it was torn down in the late 80s there was no way they’d have the tech to filter their sewage sufficiently for this to work, but nowadays we have designs for vertical farms, so with that added to the topmost levels they could have made the first steps.

The primary features of an arcology isn’t just height, it’s mostly how self-sufficient it is. You’re allowed to leave the building, but you never have to for any needs.
