Also, just because a music is even further out of key than minor doesn’t make it nightmarish. I really dig György Ligeti, who is completely out there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71hNl_skTZQ . :^)
I’m explaining major and minor keys to someone not familiar with the basic definition, so I’m going to stick to the very broadest generalities first. Yes, there are many ways a good composer can use key, but in general, major = brighter and minor = darker.
Also, I think we’re a bit past the expiration date on the spoilers for that event… ;^)
If you think minor is a dark key, then allow me to point you to Aerith Theme in D-Major from FF7. Ironically, it’s one beautiful piece that is themed around the character, more specifically, it’s about her death.
And if minor is a bad key, then twelve-tone music is a nightmare.
