I’m explaining major and minor keys to someone not familiar with the basic definition, so I’m going to stick to the very broadest generalities first. Yes, there are many ways a good composer can use key, but in general, major = brighter and minor = darker.

Also, I think we’re a bit past the expiration date on the spoilers for that event… ;^)

If you think minor is a dark key, then allow me to point you to Aerith Theme in D-Major from FF7. Ironically, it’s one beautiful piece that is themed around the character, more specifically, it’s about her death.

And if minor is a bad key, then twelve-tone music is a nightmare.

Minor key versus major key? The key is the basic group of notes used to make a musical piece. A major key is lighter and happier. A minor key is darker. It has many different sorts of combinations, from suspense or villainy to a more mature outlook. In this case, it would signify Rarity’s more grown-up ambitions for the night: social mingling. (Albeit still not terribly grown-up; just more so than the others’.)
