The World Trade Center towers were designed to probably withstand the hypothetical accidental impact of a Boeing 707 on a low-speed landing approach, not a heavier 767 moving around 500mph on a ramming course.
All of the idiots going on about the melting point of steel and the burn rate of Jet-A apparently never jostled an incandescent light bulb in their entire lives and had it burn out; you don’t have to melt steel all the way through like a cartoon for it to fail, you only have to soften it enough to make it lose its value as a structural material. If you’ve ever seen the innards of a steel framed building, any exposed beams are covered in a foam fireproofing material that’s designed to keep the steel at a low enough temperature to avoid failing long enough for the fire to be extinguished; guess what happens to spray-on foam when you crash a goddamn 180 ton airplane full of jet fuel into it at 500mph.
Gee i didn’t know they designed building knowing that religious fundamentalist are gonna crash planes into them!
I really want to see a source on that, because the idea of designing a building specifically to withstand a plane crash seems a little bizarre (not to mention the whole thing about jet fuel burning hot enough to weaken steel to the point that it’d collapse).
By the way, a source that just flat-out claims it to be true as part of their conspiracy theory that “9/11 was an inside job” is not a good source. We’re talking about a neutral source, here.
And the titanic was said to be unsinkable, but look at what happened to that claim. Point is, it wasn’t just one single factor that caused the buildings to collapse. It was mutilpe factors.
…it was designed to withstand an impact from a much bigger plane
Plus, IT’S WAS FREAKING PLANE CRASHING INTO A BUILDING jet fuel or no jet fuel that building is going down. How do people actually think the jet fuel was the only factor that could cause the structure to collapse?
Also, it doesn’t matter at all whether jet fuel can burn hot enough to melt anything. All it needs to do is spread fire to the building. Regular building fires turn steel frames into hazards, no fuel needed.
The lack of fire safety inherent in steel endoskeletons is one reason architects and engineers are looking at wood as a possible substitute.
The barrel didn’t melt. It was just weakened to the point where it could not handle firing.
You don’t have to melt something to weaken it. If that was the case, humans might still not have started working metal because we didn’t develop the technology required to melt most metals until long after we started working iron.
