Honestly I’ve had more issues with digging down and “oh fuck its the roof of a chasm” than I have digging straight into lava. But I also stop digging at about 11 deep, ’cuz that keeps you slightly above general lava depth and still in premium diamond zone.

Funny story, actually. I wanted some lava for my Obsidian Doom Fortress. Now, conventional wisdom states to never dig straight down, because you might fall into lava. So I decided to turn Murphy’s Law to my advantage. I grabbed a few diamonds and a stone pick, put the rest of my stuff away, and dug straight down.
 
I landed in a spider dungeon.

Its perfectly fine to dig straight down. Just as long as you’re digging at least a 1x2 shaft and putting up ladders. Ideally only along one side so you can put water on the bottom and just jump straight down.

I never found lava when I dug straight down…
 
I use to say the same thing too. Then I fell into a pool of lava. About all you can do is say “Well S#$t”, unless you have NEI….
