Fun fact about magnesium: You of course cannot use water to put out a magnesium fire, but you cannot even use CO2 to put out a magnesium fire - the magnesium will steal the oxygen right out of the carbon dioxide and happily keep burning! In fact, it is so strongly attracted to oxygen it can even pull the oxygen out of sand to form magnesium oxide and silicon in a thermite-like reaction.
 
If you are ever confronted with a large magnesium fire, my advice is to just go away, remove as much flammables from the surroundings as possible, and let it burn itself out.

Also used as an ignition source for many secondary explosives or combustible substances with too high a flash point to be ignited by sensible, conventional things like matches.
 
Also also used as a neat demonstration in high school chemistry labs. Just don’t look directly at it or you’ll go freaking blind.
