Welp… I tried. I always thought Celestia’s mane are actually just really fine thin hair, kind of like how Andy Price draws them in his comic.
I’m pushing myself to add more details and “clean up” my brushstrokes, but the more I go on, the more those final details doesn’t seem to fit. They don’t seem to harmonize with each other. My rendering needs a lot of work.

Indeed, it’s been a little arbitrary on my part, but I think it’s a reasonable threshold. I think this has quite a high resolution, but still not absurd (like these comics, for example).
Many pictures much larger than this one doesn’t have the tag.
So it wasn’t my connection’s fault that I couldn’t upload this?
Also, where are you getting the standards for absurd res? It’s not defined on the tag page for it.
It’s not the resolution, there are bigger ones. “Absurd res” - for static images at least - should be applied only to images above 10 Mpx, while this is below (around 9 Mpx), so I’m removing it.
But the size of the original file on DeviantArt is 34.3 MB, which is more than Derpibooru’s 20 MB limit.
I had to optimize the image before uploading it, and now it’s 3.5 times smaller (!).
All you have to do is performing Derpibooru’s optimizations before uploading.
