I have a feeling that will be a common interpretation
It’s not exactly a good portrayal of autumn leaves here, though. Unless the leaves are nearly-completely rotten (e.g. it’s end of November and they all fell during October), they’re entire autumn palette of yellows and oranges.

I… may have same thing at first of the thumbnail.
In mutual defense I think at least a part of it was the use of that one technique where if you are portraying a mass of small similarly shaped and colored objects you just sort of fill an area with the desired color and outline a few merging into the mass.
In this case it has caused the possible perception of one large simi-formless but lumpy mass rather then a collection of small brown objects.
Looked like feathers to me.
