She’s not used to the atmosphere, it’s aslo EXTREMELY dark out there compared to the Stable (Vault) she was in.
Not pitch black, but still… pretty dark.
Yes, the movie is so depressing that this fanfic is way more hopeful than Threads.

She’s not exactly used to wide open spaces or a total lack of light. Stables/Vaults rarely had their lights turned completely off, and the result of living underground would leave residents unprepared for the vast space of the outside world.
The original fic better described how Pip felt seeing such an infinite ceiling above her. If I remember it right, it was along the lines of ‘the emptiness could swallow me whole’.
I think this is when she first comes out of the stable.
