@Lawful Girly Ah, there we go…I couldn’t remember the names of any inventors, only authors. Also: recall that tiny automata have been a thing since the 1500s, such as on overly complicated clocks and dining setpieces for the middle-european royalty. Typically they were wound instead of having their own power, however.

read some old victorian lit, like almost immediately after steam technology appears, sci-fi authors started getting ideas about humanoid automata and steam-based prosthetics.

FOE’s backstory starts like 10 years after the show, at which point there’s several years of war making the ponies rapidly develop whatever technologies they can. Then there’s the 200 year gap between the war and the story proper.
 
Granted yes, going from steam engine levels of technology to cybernetics in a 20 or so year span is a bit of a stretch but hey ponies explicitly use magic to power their tech in the fic.

How? There’s nothing in the show even remotely like this and even if FoE takes place centuries later, they’ve spent most of that time in underground bunkers. How much progress can take place in those bunkers?
