It should also be noted that real faces are asymmetrical and “wonky”, it’s a fact of nature. In fact, us humans tend to feel that perfectly symmetrical faces fall into the uncanny valley.
As for proportions, that matter is entirely of aesthetic opinion. ;)
Should probably add, before I get heat for that comment, I don’t hate ’80s animation. Even though, I was more of a ’90s kid, I liked watching ’80s shows back in the ’90s. I liked the animation for Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff, the Mario Super Show, the old TMNT, and such in spite of their flaws/mistakes, and stuff.
Might be due to nostalgia, or preferences.
I admit, before I became a brony, I thought the G4 style looked a bit odd to, but then I got used to it, and love the Lauren Faust style for the show now. The simpler cartoonier look isn’t to bad, but neither were the old chubbier ponies. (Blame the cheap overseas ’80s animators back then.)
