I’m gonna gave to disagree with you there. Irony isn’t the main feature of a hipster. It’s their motives behind the irony.
Trenderhoof liked AJ not because he simply was attracted to her, he liked her because he liked THE IDEA of a good looking, hard working, simple, yet intelligent pony with a southern accent. It’s the same concept as Hipsters liking indie music. They don’t like it because it’s good music, they like it because it’s INDIE music. Liking something that is unpopular or simply not well known gives them a feeling of superiority.
I would know. I’ve done things like this. It’s all subconscious.
Seriously, learn what a friggin’ hipster is, children. Ironic fashion and affectation is as intrinsic to hipsterism as ironic appreciation of unambiguously awful movies is to MST3K/RiffTrax. Nothing about Trenderhoof suggested any irony in his trend-chasing whatsoever, and if there is no deliberate irony, there is no goddamn hispterism. The term you are looking for is “trend whore”, or possibly even just “trendy metrosexual”. He goes out looking for unusual things to promote so he can be at the cutting edge of whatever is trendy right now; all he’s after is catching The Next Big Thing before anypony else.

Image vs. Authenticity is irrelevant; what matters as regards hipsterism is the intent behind the fascination. If he had been all over AJ because “Ha ha, laughing at hillbillies is big right now, I’ll promote her as the Latest Fashion and make a dumb thing look smart”, that would make him a hipster. If he had started wearing a straw hat and overalls to big media events without comment, or met with posh high society types while affecting a chicken fried accent, that would make him a hipster. He wasn’t. His infatuation with AJ was shallow and un-self-examined, but honest and unironic.
He is a hipster. He liked AJ because he liked the IDEA of AJ, rather then just liking AJ.
Liking a band that’s considered a “hipster band” DOES NOT make you a hipster.
To be fair, Trenderhoof IS pretty hipster. XD
Say a hipster liked, I dunno, My Little Pony, for example. Liking My Little Pony doesn’t make him a hipster, but his REASONING for king it does. A hipster would like My Little Pony because he thinks it’s cool to like it, rather then simply enjoying the show like normal people do.

First of all, that’s deathcore (and I like deathcore)
Second of all, it’s more along the lines of Alcest, Deafheaven, Agalloch, Wolves In The Throne Room and later-day Darkthrone.
