Not even close, the Magus is not a good fit for an earth pony such as Applejack. Twilight or Shining Armour would make more sense as magus the Applejack anyday.

AJ seems less Paladin and more Magus(magic swordsman).

This is a Paladin
 
Though in D&D terms a paladin can also be seen as a holy warrior of light and good who choose to follow a strict moral code. This involving honor, honesty, and loyalty, in which they stand as defenders against evil and darkness. More importantly, is that they work to stand as an example, one who doesn’t so much go out of their way to preach their belief to others as to live it and show by example.
 
By their nature, they are often they are the first step forward in battle and the last to flee as they put their lived in peril to protect and guard others. They who tell their friends to go without them as they keep the enemy’s focus, even willingly giving their live if such must be done.

Feral_Socks: All those classes have magic spells. Paladins are Divine casters. Casters are a freaking party staple due to their extensive healing pool and assassins are arcane spellcasters.
