Envisioning the restoration of the Mongol Empire, Timur led his Turko-Mongol army through a path of death and destruction across Central Asia and the Middle East in the 14th century. However, he was also a shrewd diplomat and a patron of the arts, creating a double legacy as a ruthless conqueror and a promoter of Islamic culture.

If you read the explanations towards the end of the book (The Age of Tamerlane, which I have), the Uzbegs wore armor that was essentially unchanged for the past few centuries, while the late Timurids have largely adopted Persian-style armor and dress. The only stickler is the Uzbeg symbol on the banner, which is why it has been changed to Fluttershy’s cutie mark.

tl;dr- The same scene that shows the Timurids’ downfall can be used to describe their rise to power a century prior. History is full of ironies.
