Yeah, Megan’s original outfit was better. But the frilly dungarees were an attempt to make her look younger and hence easier for the target audience to identify with. :)

We have seen Surprise, she is one of the Wonderbolts. Firefly could easily make a cameo in Season 4 in a background, just with her Cutie Mark obscured, and her colours modified a little bit.

Depending on how ponies age it either takes place 20 to 40 years later or less than 10 years later. I lean toward the latter.

Believe it or not, but it’s Marvel. Yes the “we’re now owned by Disney” Marvel. Their animation studio handled most of the 80s MLP cartoon and they somehow managed to retain rights to many of the old pony designs and names. Applejack and Spike were retained by Hasbro, but not much else.
 
(fun fact: the current voice of Cobra Commander in that new GI Joe cartoon was also the voice of 80s Spike… and the voice of Buster Bunny, Cow, Chicken, The Red Guy, and a bunch of other stuff you may recognize :P )

i will say, like a japanese transformers show, the kids were the worst part of G1  
in all, not that bad a merchandise cartoon, especially a girl’s cartoon, of it’s day  
i really wish i didn’t watch Jem, though

My guess would be marketing decisions and that they wanted Megan to not look like a tomboy for some reason.

i watched G1 pony back in the late 80’s when USA showed it and i hated that blue jumper  
why didn’t they stick with the ranch outfit from the movie?

I think it would be funnier if human Applejack’s family owned pony versions of the G1 humans.

It’s all very complicated, but basically, it’s also why we haven’t seen Firefly or Surprise in the series, even if in the background and unnamed.

The point is, they don’t own most of G1 anymore. Applejack is pretty much the only character that has been there from close to the start that they own still.
