“…Wait, what.”
I know I’ll take heat for this, but not everthing needs foreshadowing. I can think of alot things you guys don’t complain about that had no foreshadowing whatsoever.
I think you’re overthinking it honestly…
Also, honestly the ‘shippers aren’t really a huge priority, and I can understand them going with a different potential girlfriend, especially due to the unfortunate-implications of CheeriMac, (undermining the lesson of “Hearts & Hooves Day”) or MarbleMac. (Possible incest.) There was also FlutterMac, (which used to be popular too) but they apparently aren’t allowed to give the Mane 6 boyfriends, as to respect the wishes of Lauren Faust. (And why they were vague on that in the finale.)
Plus. they already kinda catered to the ’shippers with stuff like Lyra & BonBon. (Originally, they were just two background ponies that just appeared sitting next to each other only once in the first season. Then suddenly they became a huge fan phenomenon.)

I mean I welcome any other explanation for the lack of foreshadowing for something so huge (or all that foreshadowing that I missed). I certainly don’t think someone ran into a board meeting and announced, “hey I’ve got a great idea! what if we disappoint all the shippers!” so, I figure sugar was just someone’s baby, and her inclusion as big mac’s love is stubborn and self-serving, and a disgusting lack of professionalism.
the characters work alright together though. you just need to foreshadow that sort of thing!
No more then it’d be for Cheerilee, or his may-or-may-not-be cousin Marble Pie.
Though, frankly you do see Mac & Sugar walk together alot in the backgrounds of episodes sense, so arguably their relationship developed mostly off-camera, and let’s face it, romance isn’t a huge priority for the show, and we can’t expect them to focus on every supporting or minor characters’ relationship.

Some still try to argue that “CheeriMac” was canon “off-screen,” and became an “aborted arc,” when the “new evil writers” came on board, and such… Some refuse to let their ‘ships sink, and will go down with them while playing violins.
Ok, speaking as somebody whom used to be kinda CheeriMac, even the “teases” don’t really confirm they were ever in a relationship, and I kinda wish some would get over it.
I also don’t get all the hate over the character SugarBelle as honestly she is still a sweet pony/person, and has a bit more spunk then Cheerilee, or Marble do.
(Do they hate her for sinking their ‘ships, or not being a fanon ‘ship, or because of that one time she lost her schmitz, and yelled at Big Mac & Justin Beiber pony for basically fighting over her, therefore “she’s a meanie pony undeserving of Mac?”)
Also, wouldn’t CheeriMac becoming canon also kinda undermine the lesson of “Hearts & Hooves,” that you can’t force a relationship?
(Plus, I’m sure some would complain about it too, as some hate fanon ’ships becoming canon.)
The most we see of them being together after the episode is just hanging out and always just minor animation details
didn’t you take the lesson from the episode about maud’s boyfriend gosh!
I beg to differ. Big Mac and Cheerilee were under the influence of a love poison, whereas his love for Sugar Belle was real and developed more naturally.
If Big Mac had ended up with Cheerilee, then the whole moral of Hearts and Hooves Day would’ve been nullified. Big Mac had to find an actual love interest, without being forced into it.
If you’re so invested in a fictional relationship that the writers taking things in a different direction is that mentally damaging to you, then that’s on you. Nobody else is at fault here.
“muh headcanon”

“USED to?”
i have many fics on ym hard drive since like 2012, but alas… due to not being able to handle criticism well.. i keep it mostly to myself. v.v i’m just not brave enough to go public. the world is pretty mean
You should write your own CheriMac fanfic if the ship means that much to you.
two months of mental therapy funny eh?
But in my headcanon… Cheryl and Big mac are still a thing so that can never be taken from me.
