There’s a lot of reference material for older fans in ALL of these products. Guess what though, they are still targeted toward the younger ages, and it doesn’t make lick of difference to them if they’re OCs of other people or not, because they are just regular ponies to everybody else.  
If you have a problem with an artist creating a small, inconsequential inclusion of her friends, which is not at all uncommon for artists to do in published work, because of some stupid-ass internet drama, re-evaluate the priorities in your life.

Have you actually read any of these? Theres a lot referenced aimed to older readers. And these 3 OCs belong to well “known” older fans. Unless you don’t care about stupid crap on the internet, then yeah, you wouldnt know or soon to know who they are.
 
Or did you mean its only “unprofessional” if you are aware of it?

There’ve already been a bunch of cameos in ‘‘Friendship is Magic’’ Issue #1, including Andy Price, his wife Alice Price, their cats Sam, Spooky, Tabitha, Boris, Bela, and Mina, Katie Cook, her husband Ryan Cook, and a friend of Andy’s. The first nine of those are even on one of the issue’s covers, since Dynamic Forces used art from a page as their exclusive variant cover.
