That is thing her mother not mentioned at all. For alk we know she either died or left them both.
 
As a result Starlight developing dependancy disorder issues that only magnified oth her dad trying be more in her life because if the absentine mother, and of course when Sunburst left.
 
The dad seemed to be aware that Starlight struggled in her youth and tried to fill that void that was missing.
 
However I guess he ebentually tookit too far in trying to placate her, and Starlight saw it as trying to make her ignore what hapoened to her and Sunburst and not taking it seriouslly.
 
So when she was old enough she she struck out into thw world on her to find solace and new meaning in her life. The rest being history.

Yeah, because war is something we actually see in this timeline… Sorry, but I know that this “losing a friend” thing seems pretty weak. And for most people I have met it is. Don’t blame them. But in my opinion there IS another point to see it:
 
  1. Not everyone reacts quite the same.  
  2. The feeling of beeing rejected CAN be traumatizing. Especially for kids.  
  3. Considering that magic is a talent, Starlight seems gifted. Gifted people often HAVE social issues.  
  4. Unicorns seems to be natural born jerks. Their magic often corrupts them, or at least let them act pretty arrogant. Canterlot unicorns, the unicorns of the early three tribes. It seems they stuck to their kind (of friends) and losing one can ruin social life/network. Yes, there are exceptions, but I always wondered if these aren’t admire inspired reactions to the balance behavior of the royal princesses (which are of course the best of the three races).

  5. Maybe Starlight actually tried to stay friend with Sunburst, but he throw her letters away, cause he thought they are from his mother. Would push the “reject feelings” theory. We actually don’t know when he started this habit. It could be an ongoing thing and always reset anything good in Starlight somewhere between the moment Sunburst left and Teenage Goth Glimmer.
     
  6. What happens to her mother?
     
  7. The overprotective father issue. Classic. Don’t tell me that isn’t a big hint to the traumatic childhood theory. ;-)
     
    Joke aside: There is s till much left in Starlights background. And yes, it isn’t quite perfect. But I don’t think it has to be. Hell, it’s not important at all. MLP is full of plot holes and lack a continuous lore. But it’s okay. Still a very enjoyable show with feel good moments. Let’s not take it seriously. ;-)

She really didn’t have much of a traumatic childhood. Her friend just left her.  
If that was bad enough to be traumatic for her, then may whatever deities that be help her should she ever actually get into a war.
