That is absolutely wrong. Cocaine is normally encountered as a salt, mostly the hydrochloride salt, but others can be encountered.
Cocaine is an alkaloid, yes, but this just means it is a naturally occuring organic chemical with Nitrogen in certain places of the molecule. It’s true that these are mostly basic but they can be acidic.
@AlexAngel
The reason why it tastes bitter is the placement of the Nitrogen, if the salt reacts with the saliva in the mouth it turns into Cocaine+ ion and, for the HCl salt, a Cl- ion. The Cocaine then readily absorbs and reacts with the tissue.
The Nitrogen causes a bitter, metallic and detergent like taste, before numbing takes place.
After a few times, the brain associates the stimulating effect with the taster, which is also why people start to like the taste of coffee.
Crack vapour is one ugly chemical taste at first but just thinking about the taste makes me all giddy for a hit. And then another. And another. And so on.
Caffeine is poisonous in large enough doses. Just saying…
My hot, fresh cup of coffee would tend to disagree. ;)
@BigBuggyBastage
Yes, well, remember that the reason some of our tastebuds can detect chemical bases, and the reason they taste bitter, is that most chemical bases are poisonous. The bitter taste is a warning–don’t eat this, it’ll make you sick or worse.
This, then fades into numbness. Then awesomeness. :D
Sorta like laundry detergent. It’s avtuallt not too bad.
Supposedly very bitter, actually. Cocaine is an alkyloid, which is a chemical base and therefore triggers the bitter group of tastebuds.
