That’s how it’s often done.
Thing is, it’s also not faster to read in many cases, because it foists the need to translate unto the reader, who may not even know the acronym or abbreviation (also goes for the writer, of course). The question is how much you lose by writing it out versus how important it is to be understood by more ponies.
but i don’t mean in story writing (originally). altogether people do that, in titles, comments, etc.
It creates disconnect between what’s said and what you read. Did the character say “kilometer” or really “km”? Moreover, it tends to look lazy, like the author couldn’t be bothered to write actual words.
that’s what context is for.
like if someone writes something like “there is a floating castle 5km over the sea”, i highly doubt ANYONE would think it was a typo.
One of those rules of writing type of things. It is actually rather grating to see someone write km instead of kilometers in a story or text for instance. If you are really into what you are reading, a story perhaps, it may drag you out of it trying to figure out if they were saying kilometers, it was a typo, or what a km is if you are not familiar with that shorthand.
why not?
also i meant it altogether ,this comic just remninded me of that weird thing
Edited
Because it isn’t proper grammar to write that in dialogue.
like why “twenty-six” when you can just write and read “26” a lot faster
why “kilometer” or “20 degrees Celcius” when “km” and “20°C” are again faster to write and read
