It’s not as far fetched as you think. Look up the trope “The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body.”
A lame justification for an out-of-character portrayal that only works if you’re trying to make fun of it (like DWK has). You can possibly ground a romance based of “how you feel when your body has changed into an alien one”, you can only make fun of that.
Or you know, teenage hormones.
