i watched shadow play then i reread reflections i realized there is a massive continuity error when it comes to star swirl & celestia & Luna. in the comics it was stated that star swirl was still around after luna became nightmare moon & was banished, but in the show he disappeared before what happened to Luna. this kinda hurts the comics on the grounds of how strong they really connected to the show. the same can be said with how he dealt with the sirens.

Good point, but I presumed Discord was famous even before he took over Equestria, given he had lived for centuries before that. And as for Tirek knowing Discord had been imprisoned, well I assume he must have had occasional news of major events even from inside Tartarus, perhaps from other creatures imprisoned there after him. After all he knew about Cadance, despite her having become an alicorn fairly recently.
Well, I’m actually only replying to the Tirek issue. I thought that perhaps Discord ruled Equestia before Tirek’s arrival, simply due to his one line: You are legend.
I believe it what something like that.
But yeah, nothing is for certain, unless there were an official release of a MLP:FiM timeline in detail. So, all’s uncertain and just speculation and head canon for now. All we know is what has be shown and/or stated.
It is nice to learn a bit more about the Equestia and the pony world.
Yeah totally, I was just kind of elaborating on what Oblivia said. I’m a Marvel / DC fan from like way back, as well as a fan of multiple canon things like Transformers, Sonic, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, and even the former MLP franchises so I’m just used to official things not being canon with one another, and it’s always bothered be when people mistake “not canon” with “not quality” :P
@Softy
Of course you’re not wrong, and that’s a totally valid argument for wanting something canon, the way “I like multiple story progressions and character interpretations” is a valid argument for wanting things to be non-canon. I’m specifically attacking the “canon = quality” misinterpretation that a lot of people have. Like in Star Wars, I love Rogue One (it’s my favorite movie out of all of them) but I still really like the now non-canon origin of the Death Star involving Bevel Lemelisk and how it was an unintentional flaw the rebels exploited (I think that specific part of the plot was superior). Either one being canon, non-canon, more canon, less canon, or 20mm vulcan canon makes no difference to the quality of the story :P

You’re not wrong, but MLP is not written by a group of people who work together to produce content with the sort of logical progression you are seeking. It’s written by contractors who are hired for a while, write what they chose to so long as it’s allowed by Hasbro, and eventually, they either lose their contracts, or find better paying jobs. The only real continuity we might experience is within the episodes written by the same writer. Other than that we can only expect a general continuity in that all episodes of a season will include the same sets and have the same characters in the cast.
There is no overarching plan for the show, because it’s already outlived its expected life cycle by 4 seasons. The most we can realistically expect is for these contractors to produce entertaining product that makes some attempt to fit in with existing episodes.
Actually that explanation was in the movie as well. Twilight specifically said “rumor has it he found a way to send them to another world, one where he believed their powers would be lost.” Unless my memory is really off.

Discord’s reign was likely short, I’m pretty sure its been specified that he was sealed for around a thousand years as well. Its easy enough to say that early Equestria was as busy with villains and threats as the last few years of modern Equestria have been. For all we know Luna becoming Nightmare Moon happened only a matter of a few years after the defeat of Discord, or even sooner.
And what makes you think Tirek happened after Discord? From what we know it makes more sense it happened before him. And we can’t judge by how Luna and Celestia look in those story book images, note that Star Swirl is called “young” but looks the same as he does now. The images for those story book retellings tend to not be fully accurate, so Celestia and Luna could easily have been foals at the time. Old enough to make some royal decisions with Star Swirl’s guidance (like Tirek’s capture and sentencing), but not fully matured into their roles.

Retroactive retroactive continuity?
Canon does matter to me. Much like Night Like with his numbers and letters in their little boxes, I find a logical series of events all tied together in one overarching history to be very satisfying. I don’t think I’m wrong for seeking that in my entertainment.
@Badumsquish
Hold on, let me make something clear. My original comment was directed at those who think the show and the comics have a shared continuity. I personally think there are two separate continuities in the 4th generation of My Little Pony.
First is
The 7 Seasons of the Television Show,
The 4 Equestria Girls Movies,
The 16 Summertime shorts,
The 5 Friendship Games Shorts,
The 11 Rainbow Rocks Shorts.
The 8 Equestria Girls Books
The 4 Princess Collection Books
The 3 Daring Do Books
The 10 G.M. Berrow Chapter Books
The 4 Reference Guide Books
The 4 2017 My Little Pony the Movie Prequel Comics
The 2017 My Little Pony the Movie Prequel Book
And the 2017 Theatrical My Little Pony the Movie.
The second continuity consists of the other 3 comics lines.
IDW’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
IDW’s My Little Pony: Friends Forever
IDW’s My Little Pony: Legends of Magic
IDW’s My Little Pony, Equestria Girls, and Power Ponies Annual
And IDW’s Fiendship is Magic Special
Well, more than a pony, less than a god. A demi-god, really, as she does have abilities beyond a normal pony and she is, if not immortal, exceedingly long-lived. She also possesses an ability to see visions, but she cannot dictate what she sees, and she can interpret them incorrectly.
So, yeah, demi-god works well. That or superhero.
Exactly. Honestly I think insisting the two are canon is unbelievably unfair and dickish to the comic writers (which makes me sad because it’s the comic’s fans who are doing it). They’re an entirely different group of people with their own stories to tell. Not only would it be near impossible for them to remain consistent with the show’s canon (the show can’t even keep it completely straight) but I feel it’s holding them to an unfair standard. It feels like some people judge them for “how canon” they are, which isn’t right at all as if something being canon with the main continuity is a measure of quality or something. Like, we don’t harshly judge the Resident Evil movies because they’re not canon with the games. We judge the Resident Evil movies because they star a boring-ass absolute Mary Sue OC played by the director’s wife and have shitty special effects XD
Like them or hate them, the comics deserve a fair assessment, like they deserve to be judged as good or bad by their own merits, and them being canon shouldn’t enter into it at all :P
Again, as I often say, the comics and the show are seperate continuities that, while similar in some aspects, should never be counted as one. Pretty much how a Batman TV series has its own canon whereas the Batman comic books have their own. Both are canon in their own right, but neither can influence the other, meaning any inconsistencies between them doesn’t count as a retcon or inconsistency at all.
Personally I find that to be an excuse by both staff to not pay more attention or put more effort into making things fit together more neatly.
When the show staff says “comics are canonical until we say so” it takes the responsibility of character and world consistency off them and Hasbro. By this point the staff know there people who will put in the effort of looking back at continuity.
I think it’s a fair bet that there is only one Hasbro representative that reads over each comic with the only purpose to ensure the comic dose not damage the brand.
THIS! Why we cant like comments!?
Celestia is just a pony, she isn’t the goddess that the fans make her in headcanon.
I think the comics were only ever considered canon when they didn’t directly contradict the show. In this case, it’s just retroactive retconning.
I don’t think i can agree with that.
“I’ll risk seeing the one pony I love just one more time, since it’s unclear how much harm this is actually causing”
is far more understandable, relatable, and frankly more intelligent than:
“I’ll just hope my loner student can make five friends in one day and save the world without any instructions from me”
or
“My niece is acting totally different all of a sudden, I’ll pretend I don’t notice so we can have a nice wedding”
or
“I’ll stop the magic-stealing monster by sending an unreliable and borderline-still-evil former enemy to capture him instead of an experienced team of heroes with a great track record”.

That she continued to use the mirror to see Sombra despite knowing it was dangerous seems to be the main complaint.
Huh? How was she foolish?
I just skimmed over that comic to remind myself of what happened. Celestia was fine. She found true love, after the pain of having lost her sister, and her emotions made her prioritize that over a vague and indefinite threat. Her actions were totally understandable, and made her character relatable.
Meanwhile Starswirl came up with the dimension-mirror thing in the first place, used it recklessly and nearly got himself and Celestia killed by a dinosaur (and then laughed about it!), then had the gall to lecture Celestia about the “dangers”, like some absolute moral arbiter.
Prick. I wouldn’t have listened to him either.
And in the end Celestia was prepared to sacrifice herself to fix everything, so… what are people complaining about?
Some people can’t stand the idea of Celestia being young and foolish.
I missed the memo. What’s so bad about Reflections? I stopped reading the comics early on, but I remember Reflections being decent.
Precisely. We are past the point where canon is coherent. Like the whovians, we must decide what canon makes sense now, because the writers do not truly care about what came before, only about what they create now.
He really lucked out then, good thing they where sent to a world that made them ~16 year old girls instead of them staying 50 foot sea monsters. Even without magic they would’ve been a problem.
@Background Pony #62EE
Well it’s really simple don’t you see, a Wizard did it.
