No lighter than transformers prime. That comic page is a pretty good idea and would fit the idea of the equestrians being able to metabolize the ambient energon of their earth and during use, use it as magic. The decepticon method would prevent them from expelling this as magic and instead drain it as energon. Perhaps something similar to the helmets Sombra put on them in the ruined timeline.
 
My focus on Energon is due to it being the keystone of what the war boiled down to and why it moved offworld; a massive shortage akin to humans facing a lack of water.
 
While the war was made a joke in certain situations, and while this crossover is certain to have it’s fair share of such moments, the conflict should be very real and the equestrians involved would not be having a happy time.

Well magic is energy and thus can converted into Energon I don’t know if it has to be specifically Energon that causes magic though nowadays there are many flavors of ’gon as there are of Kryptonite it seems.
 
Course you can just make Energon out of organic matter.

Magic has also been depicted re-energizing Autobots as seen in “A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur’s Court.”

Lost tech IS seen as magic in transformers, but yeah they have outright magic.

Cool, though I’m more leaning that magic is just that, magic and Megatron, wanting to have any sort of advantage to win against the Autobots, would attempt to harness magic. Besides, in Transformers Prime, Ratchet refers to the power of various relics of the Primes to be simply put, magic.

To have transformers cross over with MLP and have it work is simple enough:
 
Have the war breech one of the many spacebridges and have them end up on “alternate earth”. In the MLP earth, it’s discovered that “magic” is actually how the biological creatures are able to metabolize and utilize energon. Megatron, therefore, begins a bid to capture unicorns to siphon their energy, attempting to work his way towards the princesses. Optimus and the autobots need to work with the mane group to find a way back while also needing to deal with the decepticons who perhaps even work with Tirek to a degree (and perhaps backstab HIM in order to ensure the energy strictly goes to the decepticons).
 
The difficult part is alternate forms since equestria has a severe lack of technology due to magic being so prominent.
 
That said, I’m not against the idea of Optimus funneling the power of the Rainbow charged Mane 6 and engaging on a robot unicorn attack against a Tirek empowered Megatron.

When I saw the copmmercials for the toys, I was less than impressed, thinking it would be obnoxiously girly and shallow.
