Stop calling drama where there is none. It’s called disagreeing. I know that criticisms are off-limits here, but I’m going to voice my opinion anyway. A team of professionals were paid money to make this and as I said, this is a feature film, not some short film that serves as an appetizer for the main event. This is the main event.  
The backgrounds in the other leaked images were decent and fit the style of the characters lot better, which makes this one worse because we know they can do better.  
This background is distracting. The building on the left is the biggest offender, so it doesn’t help that it’s the biggest thing in the picture. I can pick apart everything that is wrong with this, but that’d take more time than I want to invest because I’d have to go into the details of the composition, the color scheme, the poor incorporation of 3D techniques that makes this background look like it’s 15 years old already and so on.
 
Speaking of things that are 15 years old, compare this to Treasure Planet’s visuals and you’ll see why this really isn’t acceptable, especially compared to the other screencaps we have seen.

Everyone please calm down. I’m sure this movie is gonna be good no matter what, trust me. We only got like 5 weeks left. Please calm down. None of it matters now, okay? We haven’t even seen the movie yet.

Let us see how it looks in motion shall we?

I get what you’re saying, but haven’t there been intentional stark contrasts between backgrounds and characters in animation many times before? Whether that contrast works this time or not, I’m not sure.

This isn’t just different aesthetic or mood. The styles of the foreground and background do not blend nicely at all. It looks like one of those pictures on Deviantart where somebody took a background from a completely different show with 3D characters and copied and pasted vectors of the 2D characters onto it. As a result they look out of place and flat. Flat as in having no depth and looking like cardboard cut-outs. Simply slapping a gradient onto Fluttershy’s mane won’t save them from that.  
I seriously feel like those Gmod ponies would look more in place against this background.  
I’m sorry but I’m going to have to call the production value of this shot subpar. If I tried presenting this to my animation teacher by the end of my freshman year he would have roasted me for this and this is a screencap from a feature film.  
If you want to see blending 2D and 3D techniques done right, I suggest you watch Disney’s Paperman, which was a short film that came out five years ago.

Looks like the kind of background there would be in old cartoons. Nothing like the show in which the background keeps the same style as the animated things.

The artbook states that’s the intention. Kludgetown was made to be a completely different mood from magical happy Equestria. Sharp angles and drab colors abound.

Why is Spike like this?  
I only see one reason: Rarity is liking someone else a bit too much. And you know who that someone else is, it’s, like, no secret anymore.
