I think it may be a refernce on how like FiM seems cute, like Merrill does, but are much more complex, and darker - Merrill is a Blood Mage, and is fascinated with demons (she even had a seemingly finctional friendship with the Pride Demon Audacity, well untill stuff happened…). She still is one of the nicest characters though.
